This might be a Kudzu funny. I've seen Kudzu get it into its head
that the zaptel card is an ethernet card. So perhaps it assigned
eth0 to the zaptel card (which obviously won't work) and eth1 to the
real ethernet.
You can check /etc/modprobe.conf to see if eth0 is so aliased.
You can remove the alias and then I tend to disable Kudzu.
(chkconfig kudzu off).
